Carbon Trust Partnership

The Carbon Trust Incubator delivered by Carbon Limiting Technologies

CLT have delivered investment readiness workshops for The Carbon Trust since 2006. In the summer of 2009 they were selected to deliver incubation services for The Carbon Trust’s incubator scheme.

CLT have provided support to over sixty start-ups in both the energy efficiency and energy generation sectors. This assistance has included raising funding and grant awards, commercialisation services and due diligence activities.

CLT’s overall approach to working with incubatee clients is grounded on five observations:

  • The diversity and depth of the CLT partners’ experiences are complementary and critical to winning client respect and attention.
  • Focused intervention with experienced resource is crucial in breaking the barriers that many companies face when transitioning to a low carbon world.
  • Commercialisation support should be structured to flow directly into development of the business plan for fund raising or an alternative commercialisation route.
  • Work should seek constant exposure to the market to evolve propositions and relationships.
  • There is a large universe of cleantech opportunity with limited resource to serve it so CLT have a collaborative ‘best team’ approach and are very happy to work with other companies.

How does the Carbon Trust incubation scheme work?

  • Up to £70k of commercialisation support is available to qualifying companies under the incubation scheme. Support might include
  • help with business and financial plan development,
  • market investigations,
  • mentoring the team,
  • product development advice,
  • IP guidance,
  • preparation for investor rounds and raising investment capital.
  • Businesses and projects accepted into the Carbon Trust scheme receive the services funded by the Carbon Trust and delivered by experienced consultants from CLT and trusted partners.

Who might qualify for Carbon Trust incubator support?

Applicants may be start-up companies, spin outs from academic/ research institutes or private companies. Each project is considered by the Carbon Trust on its merits, but companies will need to have

  • Novel, protectable technology that addresses a business need, with results from a prototype to show the technology works
  • Commercial potential with a viable route to becoming a profitable venture
  • A scalable proposition - eventual sales by the company (or via partners or licensing) need to be significant
  • A committed team willing to commit a significant portion of their time to develop the company
  • Alignment with the Carbon Trust's Low Carbon Technology Assessment grid
  • Potential to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in the UK and beyond if the technology reaches market

CLT can propose potential incubatees to the Carbon Trust at a monthly incubator panel session.
